Hans Gothard, a German, arrives in Ormston to visit the Reverend Brewer. He wants to see the Parish Records, but is mysterious about the subject of his inquiries. Gothard is suffering from severe back pain, and Len points him in the direction of the cottage hospital.Tom prescribes him some painkillers, but his interest is piqued when Hans refuses to allow a full examination.

Hans visits Wilf at the station and reveals that he knew Wilf’s brother, Charlie. Upset,Wilf tells Hans to go away but later has second thoughts. At Wilf’s home, Hans reveals that during the war he and Charlie shot each other in an exchange of fire. As they lay wounded, they got to know each other. Hans has come to Ormston, hoping for Wilf’s forgiveness. All he receives, however, is Wilf’s anger. Hans collapses – the back pain and the stress have proved too much for him.Tom is called to the scene, where Hans now explains that Charlie’s bullet is still in his body and is slowly killing him.

With Wilf still refusing to forgive him, Hans decides to return to Germany.Wilf worries that Hans is going to kill himself and calls Tom.They chase after Hans, and discover that he is going to bury Charlie’s gun near a bridge where Wilf and Charlie played as children. At last Wilf can forgive Hans, and the German agrees to undergo surgery.

Arthur is looking forward to a day out fishing with Mr Boynton and Reverend Brewer, but he breaks his ankle in an accident and is confined to hospital, creating merry hell for Linda who is trying to oversee the vaccinations of local schoolchildren. Linda calls in Len for help, but he only succeeds in creating more mayhem. Eventually, Arthur makes it up to Linda by taking charge of the situation.

An artist, Connor, arrives in Ormston. He takes a shine to Helen and offers to paint her.Then he paints Jean. Jean thinks Connor is brilliant and is inspired to tell Eddie her true feelings for him. But before she can tell him, Eddie decides his relationship with Helen isn’t working and dumps her.
