It’s the day of the wedding. Deborah’s mother, Dora, is marrying her fiancé in Ormston. Derek is a war hero, but Deborah is deeply suspicious of the whole thing. Then she learns that the bridegroom is suffering from a form of senility and doesn’t have much time before the condition makes his life intolerable. Once Deborah knows this, she gives the wedding her blessing.

Arthur decides to give Dora a wedding present and gets Wilf to procure for him a rare talking parrot. It arrives with a note saying the parrot should never be fed rum. Intrigued, Wilf and Arthur ignore the instruction to see what will happen.The drunken parrot goes mad, impersonating Arthur and generally causing mayhem. Wilf is doing his best to kill the bird, while Arthur has to find a way to get it to sober up.

Tom is called to the site of a farming accident. He finds a man called Bill with a damaged arm next to a threshing machine. His wife Aggie is distraught, because she feels Bill has been driven to the accident by his oppressive boss, Lane.Tom decides to get personally involved in the case and persuades the rest of the farm labourers to go on strike. An angry Lane shows up at wedding and gets embroiled in a fight with Tom, who learns that Bill has a drink problem which was the cause of the original accident.

The wedding is further disrupted when Len, under instructions from his boss to up the arrest rate, decides that Derek is a jewel thief. Derek must prove his innocence before the marriage can proceed.
