A Life Outside: American Mountain Guides

This documentary pays homage to Wyoming's pioneering mountain guides and their crucial contributions to the advancement of safe and empowering climbing practices. By weaving together the stories of legendary figures like Glenn Exum and Paul Petzoldt with contemporary narratives, the film will serve as an enduring source of heritage, wisdom, and inspiration for the broad and interconnected community deeply invested in mountaineering and outdoor pursuits.

Home From the Vietnam War

A Vietnam War hero, U.S. Army Lieutenant Lee Alley, wears an extraordinary badge of honor. He is one of the most decorated veterans in the state. This documentary features Lt. Alley’s remarkable story—his upbringing in Wyoming and service in a controversial war, to the treatment he encountered after his return home from Vietnam and his struggles with PTSD. Now, Lt. Alley uses his experience to help other veterans in the country.

Before Wyoming

Before Wyoming: The West in 1776

This documentary expands the map of the Revolutionary era in North America to include what we now know as the American West. Seldom told in history books is this other story of upheaval and change, just beyond the edges of European and Anglo-American exploration, in the heart of the continent, where Native American communities underwent dramatic change.

Made in the West

Explore the beauty and utility of American functional art, from custom furniture to handcrafted tools and clothing. Featuring artisans, historians, and educators, this film highlights the legacy of western style, the challenges facing today’s master craftsmen, and efforts to inspire a new generation of makers.

This film is a co-production between Wyoming PBS and Nashville PBS. 

Gravel and Grit: Bridging the Great Divide

This documentary tells the story of a team of cyclists from Central Wyoming College as they traverse 1,000 miles of rugged backcountry terrain along the Continental Divide. From Eureka, Montana, to Atlantic City, Wyoming, the riders test the limits of their courage and physical abilities, ultimately achieving goals they never thought possible while experiencing the power of nature.

Produced by Wyoming PBS, this documentary inspires hope and provides a model for a unique educational approach.

Call of the West

This epic documentary chronicles the rise of the dude ranch—an enduring symbol of the American West. Against stunning landscapes, ranchers battle modernization, economic struggles, and generational shifts to keep their legacy alive. Through gripping stories of iconic families, this film reveals their fight to preserve a way of life that refuses to fade into history.

Afar & Below: The Story of the Wyoming Trona Miners

The trona industry is deeply woven into Wyoming’s culture, yet the story of the miners who keep this massive industry running remains untold. During a day in their life underground, we dig into the community, culture, and history of these subterranean cities—and their impact on our lives back on the surface. 

This documentary is a Wyoming PBS production directed by Burning Torch Productions.

Mountain Roots

What can be accomplished with a spirit of youthful wonder and curiosity? Bennett, a 9-year-old from Wyoming, has climbed in some of her home state's most famous ranges. Now, she is ready to take on new summits in northern Italy, where she discovers a centuries-old heritage rooted in the Alps that may explain her fascination with the outdoors.

This documentary is a co-production of Wyoming PBS and Burning Torch Productions.

Headwinds: Bikepacking the Red Desert

Four cyclists bikepack across Wyoming’s Red Desert, discovering the rewards and challenges of human-powered travel in a remote landscape. Along the way, they learn about the desert’s history, geology, wildlife and solitude. Rough roads and tough weather make the Red Desert a place that rewards those who slow down and explore.

This Wyoming PBS original documentary invites viewers to discover one of Wyoming’s gems and embrace the freedom and joy of riding a bike.
